Zesty Zilij

Zilij, or more commonly known as Zellige, is a lovely traditional Moroccan art form. It is a form of Islamic Art that was introduced in the 700s AD. It consists of beautiful intricate patterns grouped together that originally depicted original artworks consistent with the Islamic teachings. With the advancement in time, the framework of the patterns of Zellige has grown as well, fitting perfectly with the modern interior décor.

History of Zilij

Since Islam forbade the depictions of living things in their art, the craftsmen thought of including colours and geometrical shapes that had their own meaning and symbolism of their own religion in their designs to induce purity. Zellige soon became a symbol of power and royalty throughout in history. Colours were limited by their time and included only a handful of shades. Initially only the shades of white and brown were used. Then, the technique introduced blue, green and yellow colours in the 14th century. Later, in the 17th century, red was added. The colours were used to symbolize various elements of nature. However, with the sophistication in art from time to time, we now have a variety of assorted colours.

Forms and trends

The basic shape of zilij is square. The other shapes include an octagon, star, cross and cabochon. Also, a combination of different shapes are also used. The designs are molded on a thick base made of clay, later strengthened by a cement base. The patterns and shapes are so designed that they interlock into one another at the corners creating a bigger form of small designs. Craftsmen have been using geometric shapes, honeycombs, webs, steps and shoulders and checkerboards too.
Assiduous attention is required in the meticulous process of making zellige. Apart from directly introducing designs to the shapes, various different patterns are cultivated on smaller shapes which are later integrated into one single work.

Why use Zilij?

The art of zilij was implemented on the walls of palaces, tombs, fountains, patios and baths, Imitatingroyalties, the wealthy merchants in the medieval ages used zilij in their homes. The general idea of zilij was to incorporate Islamic teachings into our daily lives. This brings a sense of spiritual aspect in our homes. The very feeling of being close to the ultimate benevolent creator of the universe is what human beings crave for. This form of Islamic art has had a significant influence on the Western art.

History of use of Tadelakt and Carved Gypsum

Gypsum carving has been a part of monuments and structures for a long time. Alabaster, a form of gypsum which has been widely used for sculpture building by many cultures including Ancient Egypt and Rome. Over the years, it has demonstrated its versatility and has become an everyday name in homes, buildings and structures. Let’s take a look at its timeline.

Ancient Egypt

Gypsum’s first recorded use can be seen in the construction of Pyramids. And as the world witnesses, it is still visible and standing after 5000 years. What else is needed to prove the durability of the material?

18th Century

A French chemist by the name Lavoisier began research on gypsum and studies its properties. Large deposits of gypsum were discovered near Paris, and hence the name ‘Plaster of Paris’ came into use.

19th Century

People started using gypsum boards in construction. Named after Augustine Sackett, it was called “Sackett Board” and had thin layers of Plaster of Paris placed between wool felt paper.

20th Century

Due to rapid demand constructions during the world war I for construction of military housing, there was a sharp increase in the demand of gypsum board. Gypsum board’s fire-resistant qualities also made it a preferred choice for military housing.

Modern Day

Now over 97% homes use gypsum board. It has remarkable qualities to adapt recast and reformulate into many varieties of plasters and valuable materials. They have also started working on its environmental aspects to make it eco-friendly for the environment.

Tadelakt or Moroccan lime plaster have been known to give seamless finish especially for wet areas like the bathroom.

It's got its roots in the mountains of Marrakesh. In the eleventh century, people found deposits of limestone which acted as the source for Tadelakt. Now Marrakesh is known around the world for the unique polished lime plaster found in the region.

The original Tadelakt artisans believed that it was necessary to caress the walls to experience and enjoy the real texture of Tadelakt. It is believed to be as soft as silk. But it has never been easy to mould and work on such a complex and intricate material and has required years of expertise.

At Ornate décor, they have been proving their capabilities and their talent for carving gypsum and Tadelakt through the years. To know more about them check their website http://www.ornate-decor.com/home

Here’s how beautiful designs are made out of gypsum

Without doubt, the art of plastering has constantly held a reasonable utilitarian value to our construction environment. Stuccoes rendered in outside give a sacrificial capacity, shielding powerless substrates from disintegration and water harm. Mortar connected inside protects, weakens sound and gives a clean, tough divider surface. Expulsions of profiles in mortar make moldings that include design enthusiasm, outlining space by methods for shade and shadow. Be that as it may, among the many art specializations of the Decorative and Applied Arts, mortar is by a wide margin a standout amongst the most expressive mediums. We'll take a quick review of the Art of carved gypsum ornamentation by means of a portion of the customs still honed in Decorative Plastering.

Ornamentation

There are two vital ways to deal with making carved gypsum ornamentation in mortar. The first is reductive. Morocco has developed ace craftsmans of "gebs", also called Gypserie, a brilliant custom of cutting into gypsum mortar that is exceptionally likened to wood cutting, utilizing comparable etches and gouges.

A more across the board reductive strategy connected to a wide range of mortars far and wide is Sgraffito, cutting mortar in low alleviation. Sgraffito depends on difference of shading between mortar layers for the impact and is a moderately cheap approach to include a considerable measure of visual punch.

Obviously there are the added substance types of ornamentation for which mortar is well known. The finest ornamented stucco is finished by hand, in situ. Lime is the favored medium albeit now and again an amount of gypsum is added to accelerate the work and make higher alleviation. The most remarkable work left by the old Romans and imitated in the Renaissance was all carefully did by hand by multitudes of stone carvers. These probably have been exceptionally energizing circumstances to be a plasterer! As form making advances expanded in the eighteenth century, in situ ornamentation turned out to be generally uprooted by pre-thrown ornamentation in gypsum mortar. Gypsum has a fast set, only a couple of minutes, so once time has been put resources into an ace model, many duplicates can be made rapidly.
